In the face of a growing "woke" agenda in our schools, it's crucial for Christian parents to take a stand and actively participate in their children's education. Our school system often makes parents feel powerless, but it's time to reclaim our roles as primary educators of our children. Emancipation from this system can no longer be dismissed as a radical idea but must be embraced as a necessary step toward ensuring our children remain safe, have healthy childhoods, and receive an education that aligns with our traditional American values.
Recently, I came across a heartfelt post on social media from a parent deciding to homeschool their child after Labor Day. The parent expressed nervousness but hope, and I joined the conversation to share that this nervousness is often a byproduct of the very school system that instills that sense of inadequacy and dependence. I reassured her that this instilled fear can be overcome with the right support and resources, just as she released her initial adhesion to the schools.
My books They're Your Kids and Teach from Love are meant to offer practical advice and encouragement for parents considering homeschooling. They're Your Kids recounts my own journey into homeschooling and it also provides the compelling case for why parents should remove their children from the conventional school system. In the book, my research reveals how schools often fail to meet educational standards while actively promoting ideologies that contradict Christian values.
The current school system is deeply flawed but it is successful People who think they can fix it will meet a disturbing surprise. For example, the introduction of completely untested common core standards and other politically or financially motivated shifts have perverted the institutions. The result is a system that not only underperforms academically but also undermines the moral and spiritual development of our children and destroys families and culture in its wake.
Homeschooling is the most powerful solution. Contrary to the myth that homeschooling is only for those with significant resources or time, it is increasingly accessible. With the wealth of online resources and support networks available today, and the understanding that home education is the overall parenting of the child, while academics can be accomplished in very little time each day, homeschooling is a viable option even for parents working full-time. The key to successful homeschooling lies in fostering a child's natural curiosity and interests rather than adhering strictly to traditional academic measures.
Parents should seek out local homeschooling co-ops and online communities for support and assistance. These networks can provide invaluable resources and encouragement. The homeschool community tends toward generosity – we feel like we’ve discovered the secret sauce, and we want everyone to taste it! We also are invested in growing our ranks. Additionally, organizations like the Homeschool Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) offer legal support and guidance for new homeschooling families.
For those who think homeschooling full-time might be untenable, consider first that perhaps your interpretation of what homeschooling entails might be unduly influenced by external, uninformed factors. Second, research alternative schedules or hybrid homeschool models that combine part-time schooling with homeschooling. The goal is to create an environment where your children are nurtured primarily by you, the parent, and educated in ways that align with your principles and values.
While the public school system and schools in general may be deeply entrenched in our culture, we must remember that individually we have the power to change our children’s educational journey. It’s time to reclaim our responsibility and prioritize our children’s well-being and education. Home education is the most effective and expedient way to do so.
